MARGAO: In view of the concerns raised by parents regarding the safety of school students, a taluka-level meeting was held between teachers and traffic police.

Organised by the State Education Department, an NGO conducted the training session and an ex-army man, who now works with civil society, addressed the teachers.
Emphasis was laid on how to make the students self-reliant and moreover to impart knowledge beyond academics, that can not only help the students gain better values, but would also make their parents proud.
Besides their own safety and communicating about their movements between school and home, other issues were also discussed such as students having a sense of civic responsibility and being aware of what is right and wrong, even if it concerns matters like hygiene and waste management.
It was further impressed upon the teachers that given the size of the population of public, it is difficult for the police to keep an eye on all the thousands of individuals that may pass a certain area, and thus the involvement of teachers is required too. The teachers responded positively to the training session.
It may be recalled that there have been a lot of concerns about the safety of school children in Salcete. From rumours about alleged kidnapping attempts doing the rounds, which were downplayed by the police, to the difficulties parents face in dealing with traffic congestion during peak hours – before school begins and after it closes- there has been a demand from the parents for the schools and the police to be proactive.
