PANJIM: Seventy one police personnel including police inspector in the jurisdiction of Panjim Police Station have isolated themselves at a quarantine facility after a woman sweeper tested positive for COVID, on Sunday.

The personnel, majority of whom, are from the Panjim Police Station have undergone testing and awaiting results. Twenty five policemen including police inspector from Panjim Police, 16 from Police Control Room, 15 Wireless Unit and 12 from Traffic Cell besides three others have quarantined themselves until the results.
“We got ourselves tested soon after receiving the news about the woman sweeper’s COVID status. All the policemen who were present on the day she had cleaned the premises, are tested for COVID. Until the results, we will remain in quarantine for the safety of others as well,” an official spoke to Herald from the quarantine centre.
The woman, presently undergoing treatment, hails from Vasco, which is the worst affected town. The entire premises also underwent sanitisation to prevent possible spread of the virus.
With 71 personnel quarantined, the existing staff are holding the fort.
“Other staff and the personnel are holding the charge at their respective police station and units. Policemen are already at the receiving end of the dreaded virus. We hope not to face Ponda Police Station like situation,” the official said.
Ponda Police Station recorded 40-odd cases in the recent past after one of their staff from Kundaim tested positive. As of now around 53 policemen from across different police stations are infected with the virus of which over 20 have recovered.
