CANACONA: Claiming that Mashem-Balli stretch of the NH66 is unfit for heavy vehicles on account of its faulty design; locals have demanded an immediate ban on movement of heavy vehicles along the route.
It is pertinent to note that the stretch has witnessed several accidents including fatal ones in the past.
The locals alleged that accidents have occurred due to faulty road design by the NH engineers.
Since the last 7 days on an average one accident has been reported along the route. On a regular basis, interstate buses, cars, tankers, and trucks are involved in the accidents due to the bad road design, informed Satish Paingankar, former deputy sarpanch of Poinguinim.
On Wednesday, a marble laden multi-axle truck lost control after negotiating a sharp turn at Pate near Balli and fell on its side on the right side of the road. The impact was such that the consignment came crashing on the road. Luckily, at that moment no vehicle was commuting along the route.
However, the vehicle and most of the load got damaged in the mishap with the driver and the cleaner escaping with minor injuries, sources said.
