Book release function
PANJIM: The Bilingual Portuguese Grammar (Compendio de Gramatica Portuguesa) and re-launching of 6 titles authored by Vasco Pinho will be released on March 24 at 10:30 am in Menezes Braganza Institute, Panjim by the Consul General of Portugal in Goa, Dr Antonio Jose Marques Sabido Costa.
The ceremony will be followed by an exhibition of fifty rare historical photographs. The sale of 7 books (5 Collectors’ items, autographed) opens at 9:30 am and closes at 1 pm.
Expo underway at Margao
PANJIM: Goa Expo 2013, a consumer fare underway at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao by Enhance Exhibitions and Events, a Gujarat based company having branch office in Goa, has organized products of various companies under one roof. The five-day event will conclude on March 24, says a press release.
American cardiologists in Panjim
PANJIM: Leading interventional cardiologists from the USA Dr Theodore Abraham, MD, FACC and Dr Maria Roselle Dias, MD, FACC, are visiting Goa and will conduct a cardiac camp at the P F das Neves Mascarenhas, OPD Cardiac Diagnostic Clinic of the Goa America Heart Foundation, Menezes Polyclinic (CMM Hospital), Near Bishop’s House, Altinho, Panjim.
Both are cardiologists at Johns Hopkins Hospital that is ranked among the top three cardiology programs in the US.
Dr Theodore Abraham, who has expertise in imaging and general cardiology will consult patients on April 1 and Dr Maria Roselle Dias, having expertise in non invasive cardiac electrophysiology and general cardiology will be seeing patients on April 2.
Timings are from 9 am to 12 noon.

Weaves sale and expo
PANJIM: Weaves, is a cotton and silk spectrum exhibition cum sale that is to be held from March 27 to 31from 11am to 9 pm at Taleigao Community Centre
It is an event meant to provide a marketing platform for weavers to market their ware. Weavers from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Gujarat and many designers working with weavers bring together a collection of handloom cotton and silk sarees, dress materials, kurtas, kurtis, kidswear and home furnishings.
It has products for every age group, be it college goers, office goers or house wives. Men need not be disappointed as it also has a unique collection of fabrics for them – design shirts, sherwanis, stoles, etc.
The event is organized in more than 25 cities across the country and has attracted many cosmopolitan customers. It is the first time that Weaves is coming to Goa.
Ferry services suspended
PANJIM: The general public is informed that the ferry service on the Assolna-Cavelossim ferry route will be temporarily suspended on March 25 upto 11am in order to replace the ferry boat ‘Britona’.
Two held for Mangalsutra theft
BORIM: Ponda Police arrested two women in connection with the theft of a Mangalsutra at Tapobhumi in Kundaim and they have been remanded to five days in police custody.
According to Ponda police, Dipti Shetkar of Morlem-Quepem had lodged a police complaint on March 21, accusing Bindiya Satelkar of Arpora and Netra Arondekar of Pernem of stealing her Mangalsutra valued at Rs 55,000.
Shetkar stated that she had gone to attend a religious function at the Tapobhumi-Kundai on March 20 and had placed her Mangalsutra near a tap in the bathroom. She forgot to collect the Mangal Sutra and later returned to the bathroom, only to find it missing.
On the second day, devotees attending the function found two women moving suspiciously and intimated the authorities of Tapobhumi. A police team was summoned to the spot and the two women were taken into custody.
Ponda police have registered the case under Section 380 IPC and ASI P Gaude is investigating.
CM playing with student’s lives: NCP
PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is playing with the lives of students of the state by not giving grants to private schools teaching in English medium at the primary level, NCP chief spokesperson Trajano D’Mello alleged while responding to the recent decision of the government announced in the Goa Assembly.
Addressing the media, D’Mello said that the fact that 27,639 students were forced to study in private schools was a violation of the Right to Education Act, which offered free and compulsory education.
“The chief minister’s statement on the floor of the House that he will not give grants to private schools because they had given an undertaking that they will not ask for grants, is an act of dictatorship,” D’Mello said, emphasizing that the Right to Education Act supersedes all undertakings given by schools.
He further alleged that the decision smacked of arbitrariness, especially given that Diocesan and Religious schools which are also teaching in English medium have been getting grants. He has demanded that the every child should be given free and compulsory education in the neighbourhood school. “We demand that the RTE Act be implemented in the state and that each and every child be given free and compulsory education in their neighbourhood school,” D’Mello said.
