Chemical unit gutted in Cuncolim, Rs 3 cr loss

A major fire completely gutted an alkyl phenol manufacturing factory at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, destroying property worth Rs three crore in the wee hours of Monday.

MARGAO: A major fire completely gutted an alkyl phenol manufacturing factory at the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, destroying property worth Rs three crore in the wee hours of Monday.

Fire tenders from Margao and Curchorem fought the fire for over two hours and is believed to have managed to save property worth Rs one core. 

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown but fire officer Gill De Souza said two labourers working in the unit attributed it to power fluctuations. 

Preliminary information revealed that the factory was manufacturing alkyl phenol with caustic flakes, acid and a catalyst as raw material.

This is second incident wherein a factory in the Cuncolim Industrial Estate has been gutted by fire within the last one month and half. Ms Metroplast had gone up in smoke on January 18.
