VASCO: The shortage of staff in the Mormugao Municipal Council has hampered the smooth functioning of the taxation section.
The staff, which was taken on deputation by the Deputy Collector Office, has paralysed the taxation section of the municipality.

“I have requested the administration to return the staff taken on deputation as soon as possible,” said Chairperson Nandadeep Raut.
Speaking to this daily, Raut stated that around 10 days ago Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had a meeting with the multi-departmental staff in which I and the Deputy Collector were also present. In the meeting, the Chief Minister had taken the review of the overall works from the departments and the MMC.
The Chief Minister instructed to complete the backlog pending works and had also emphasised on the recoveries of the outstanding dues. But MMC is still facing the problem of the staff shortage to undertake the pending works.
When asked whether the MMC staff, which was deputed at the Deputy Collector’s Office, for the COVID related duty, Raut replied in negative.
He revealed that during the review meeting, he had highlighted the issue of staff shortage before the Chief Minister and had also instructed the Deputy Collector to depute back the staff to the MMC but now 12 days have passed we are yet to get our staff back.
“It is adversely affecting our work of recovery of dues, paperwork, taxation related tasks etc. I also had a telephonic chat with the Deputy Collector and requested him to send back our staff. Almost, Rs 5 crore worth recovery files are pending for the signatures and other paperwork which the staff has to do,” he added.
Most of the staff of the MMC was taken by the Deputy Collector’s office under deputation and hence the taxation section of the MMC which deals with taxation and technical issues had been paralysed since several days.
The MMC has been already facing financial crunch since recovery of the outstanding could not be done with shortage of staff causing delay in the salaries.
