‘Old, abandoned buildings are breeding ground for mosquitoes’

MARGAO: Margao Urban Health Centre (UHC) has requested the Margao Municipal Council’s (MMC) cooperation in inspecting old, abandoned buildings as part of its anti-vector borne disease prevention drives.

During the District level coordination review meeting, Dr Socorro Quadros, Health Officer of Marago UCH, raised concerns about unused tanks on the roofs of these buildings and the potential for mosquito breeding sites. However, the UHC cannot access the buildings without information on the owners and their addresses from the MMC.

Dr Quadros noted that they had managed to get residents of other building societies to take preventative action. GOACAN convenor Roland Martins suggested that the UHC file a report with photographs of the buildings/tanks, obligating the MMC to take necessary action.
