KARWAR: Responding to the strike by the AIMTC, members of various transport organisations blocked all vehicles along the highway at the Sales-Tax check post in Majali on Monday.
“The collection of the entry fee is illegal and Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar must stop this collection,” said Madhav Naik, president of Uttar Kannada Truck Owners Association.
“On March 30, we had called a token strike by blocking the road, but now the AIMTC has taken decision to stop transport operations to Goa till the Goa government rolls back on the entry fee collection,” he added.
The protestors blocked buses, cars and other vehicles from crossing over to Goa. Stranded passengers and motorists en route to Goa pleaded with the protestors to allow them to proceed.
PI Sannatamma requested the protestors to clear the road and advised them that blocking of a national highway was an offence.
Left with no option, Karwar police took the agitators to the Chittakula Police station and detained Madhav Naik, Prashant Tendulkar, Vithal Gaonkar and Mohammed Hanif as part of a preventive arrest of the Karntaka Police Act.
Police cleared the highway and restored normal traffic along the route.
