VASCO: South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar Thursday met Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari at his office in Delhi to discuss the issue of pending salaries of Western India Shipyard Limited (WISL) workers in Mormugao.
Sawaikar informed Herald that he met Gadkari and conveyed to the latter that for the last 10 months, the Goa WISL management had not paid salaries to its 350-odd employees. He also briefed Gadkari about the hardships faced by the workers and the unrest amongst them.
“The WISL workers had approached me with their issues some six months back. Power Minister Milind Naik and I met the workers, had two sittings with them and their issues were resolved to the extent that the pending salaries were paid to the workers by the management. When I came to know about their issue through the newspapers, I decided to meet the Shipping Minister and appraised him about the issues and unrest amongst the workers. After giving a patient hearing, Gadkari said he would try to help the workers and give them justice,” said Sawaikar.
