Tribute to Fr Antimo Gomes

Fr Antimo Gomes was appointed and installed as Canon of the Cathedral Chapter on August 22 and October 23, 2011 respectively. Presently he was nominated as attorney of the Cathedral Chapter.
Fr Antimo Gomes was born in Panzorconi, Cuncolim on March 1940. He was a son of Miguel Xavier Gomes and Maria Crizolinda Joanina Gomes.

He joined Saligao Seminary in the year 1952. When he completed the Philosophy and Theology courses, he was ordained priest in 1964 and celebrated his first mass in the Church of Cuncolim.
He passed his MA from Bombay University through the Post Graduate Centre, Panjim with Philosophy and Sociology as his subjects.
He was appointed secretary of Secretariado das Escolas Catolicas at the Archbishop’s House, Altinho, Panjim and resided there from 1969 to 1982. Then he was appointed Director do Lar de Estudantes, Altinho, Panjim from 1983-1984. He was a lecturer at St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, Goa (a diocesan college) for three years; Vice Principal for four years and Principal for 11 years there. Simultaneously he served as Administrator of St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Mapusa, Goa in the same educational complex.
He had several assignments at the Goa University. He was member of the Sports Council for a period of three years; member of the Academic Council for three years; member of the Reconciliation Committee between University and Students Community for seven years; and Chairman of Principals’ Forum of Non-Govt Colleges for four years.
He had assignments in the All India Christian and Catholic Colleges Association, as a member of the executive committee of the All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE) for a period of three years, with its headquarters at New Delhi; as also was member of the executive committee of Xavier Committee of Xavier Board for Catholic Colleges, with its headquarters at Secunderabad.
The Government of Goa also appointed him vice chairman of the Literacy Mission for North Goa; member of the Goa Board for Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Alto Betim for three years and member of the executive committee of the Goa Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Association, Govt. of Goa and a member of the Grant-in-Aid/Evaluation Committee of the Goa Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan for a period of six years.
He was parish priest of the Immaculate Conception Church (Igreja Matriz) Panjim, for nine years from 2002 to 2011.While in this church, he was assigned to hold the post of President of DSE (Diocesan Society of Education) for two consecutive terms of three years each.
He received Certificates of Appreciation from the Mapusa Municipal Council; from the Archbishop of Goa and Daman. Panjim and from the Principals’ Forum of Non Government Colleges of Goa.
He also received awards from AIACHE (All India Association for Christian Higher Education) as Innovative Principal and by the Government of Goa and Daman, for socio-educational work on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Goa Liberation.
