PANJIM: Transport Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar said that 50 percent of the revenue generated by the department will be spent on road safety measures. He made the announcement at a function to distribute helmets as part of the road safety week.
Dhavalikar said that the department’s revenue, which was hardly Rs 76 crore per annum increased to Rs 476 crore after he took charge of the portfolio.
He said that Rs 10,000 crore will be spent on widening of national highways in the State and 75 black spots which have been identified will be developed leading to a reduction in accidents.
The minister said that the Union government is in the process of amending the central M V Act in which 43 different issues will be addressed. He said the fine for not wearing helmets will be increased to Rs 1000 from Rs 100.
He mentioned that the issue of installing in taxis GPS, meter and speed governors will be also tackled in the amendment.
“We are trying to get this fixed at the manufacturing level so it will not pinch the pockets of the people,” he said.
