Panchayats in mining talukas such as Kirlapale and Sanvordem, tipper and truck owners association and Mormugao Ships Agents Association (MSAA) have petitioned the Finance Minister pointing out that the mining companies in Goa have to bear a whole gamut of taxes by way of 30 per cent export duty, 15 per cent royalty, 10 per cent Goa Permanent Fund apart from a numerous other cess, VAT, etc amounting to almost 60 percent of the revenue.
“With taxes contributing to the major portion of sales (amount), fears are being raised that a number of mines could possibly not revive as the cost of production will exceed the market price,” the memorandum reads.
Kirlapale Sarpanch Deepak Pawaskar highlighted the hardships faced by people due to the two-year ban and expressed concern over their survival.
He demanded that the export duty be slashed to make mining viable for companies that provide livelihoods to people.
