MGP MLA Sudin Dhavalikar urged the govt to re-start mining engineering courses, which have been suspended owing to the closure of mining industry in the State. Speaking during a discussion on education, the MGP legislator said that non-Goan students, hailing from mining-bearing states could avail of the opportunity. “Mining engineering course had started in GEC but eventually the strength of Goan students began to drop. This led to the closure (of admissions). It is a wrong decision. If there are no Goan students, students from mining-bearing States like Odisha can take up admissions here,” he said.
The State had initially discontinued diploma in mining engineering programme at govt polytechnic in Bicholim and from the current academic year 2019-20, the degree course at GEC has been suspended. However, the second and the third year of the program is underway.
Sudin also sought regular patrolling at the college campus in view of presence of large number of students including those in the IIT-Goa. In another suggestion to the govt, NCP MLA Churchill Alemao suggested that the govt considers applications from educational institutions for increasing classrooms in Science, Commerce and Arts as several pass outs were deprived of admissions due to limited seats.
