PANJIM: Ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Goa Mahila Congress sought Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s support to convince Prime Minister Narendra Modi to introduce and pass the Women’s Reservation Bill, with 33 percent reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.
The Mahila Congress delegation, led by its president Adv Pratima Coutinho, on Monday submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging him to write to the Prime Minister to introduce the Bill in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.
“The introduction of the bill during the winter session of the Parliament is imperative to ensure reservations are in place for the next general elections in 2019, as there is substantial work envisaged by the bill after being passed,” Coutinho said.
Addressing media persons after the meeting with the Chief Minister, Coutinho said that INC President Sonia Gandhi had in May launched a signature campaign to garner public support for the introduction of the Bill in the Lok Sabha. Nearly 33 lakh signatures have been received till date, she said.
