Path-breaking sarcasm: Fatorda lady asks for permit to do business on a severely encroached footpath

Offers to pay Rs 1 lakh as monthly rent to trade as many vendors have encroached foot-paths anyway; unique move is a part of her sustained campaign against vendors doing illegal businesses

MARGAO: A senior citizen from Fatorda, Shaila Vernekar, resorted to a unique way to protest against the alleged illegal business activities on the footpaths of the commercial town by asking the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Tuesday to inward her application seeking permission to carry out business on the footpath.

In fact, Vernekar is even ready to pay Rs 1 lakh to MMC as rent towards running business on the footpath.  Her sarcasm filed move is in continuation of her sustained campaign against vendiors doing illegal businesses on footpaths

It may be recalled that in the past, she had demanded immediate action against all the vendors engaged in carrying out

businesses on the footpaths of Margao.

She had even criticised the civic body for taking no action against these non-Goan vendors who are engaged in the business illegally with impunity.

Now, upset with the civic body for no action, she has applied for permission to do business on the footpath and offered to pay Rs 1 lakh as rent.

“Yes. Through my letter I have informed the Chief Officer that I am ready to pay a rent of Rs 1 lakh as rent for carrying out business on the footpaths of Margao and hence the civic body should allow me to do so,” she said.

She further said that she should be allowed to do so like how the civic body has given a free hand to

the non-Goan vendors to carry out business on the footpaths.

“I have told the Chief Officer that I am ready to get NOCs from Traffic Police and other authorities concerned, but allow me to do the business on footpaths. Getting Rs 1 lakh as revenue per month from one person is not a joke and hence the civic body needs to take my application seriously,” said Vernekar.
