MMC door-to-door waste collectors cry foul

MARGAO: Employees engaged by the Margao Municipal Council for door-to-door waste collection have cried foul over the non-payment of wages for the months of January and February this year.

The beleaguered workers on Thursday have conveyed their grievances to Municipal Councillor Raju Naik, who have urged the MMC Chairperson Gonzaco Rebello to resolve the pending issue in consultation with Chief Officer Naveen S L.
One of the workers told the media that they were engaged by the Civic body to carry out the door to door waste collection around the time when the exercise was handed over to the Self Help Groups in some of the municipal wards. “We too are now part of the SHGs, but the Civic body cannot deny us our dues when we were engaged for the exercise’, the woman worker said, while seeking the intervention of the Chief Officer to find out a way out to the payment imbroglio.
When Herald contacted the MMC Chairpersons to shed light on the episode, Gonzaco Rebello said the Civic body has forwarded a proposal to the government to seek approval of the Director of Municipal Administration to make the payments.
“I will discuss the matter again with the Chief Officer so that the same is resolved at the earliest”, Rebello added.
