In a bid to play top flight football, Meldon D’Silva has joined only Goan I-League team — Churchill Brothers FC — in a hope of playing I-League football once again.
“The main reason I joined Churchill Brothers is to play in I-league as I can’t keep playing in the local league for long. I had two great seasons at FC Goa development team and I personally feel I deserved more,” expressed Meldon Silva.
Meldon D’Silva was part of the FC Goa development team which won the Goa Professional league last season who was instrumental in the side’s triumph. The lanky defender had eight goals and 15 clean sheets to his names in the 20 games for the club. However, the lad couldn’t impress the senior team coach in his two years at the club.
“I was expecting to be in the FC Goa senior team in the ISL this year, but things didn’t go according to my expectations. So I decided to join Churchill Brothers to play in the National league and give my best,” said the 24 year-old lad, who will turn 25 on November 17.
In 2014, Meldon was tipped to be Goa’s brightest talent. He was part of the Goa team which won the Lusofonia gold for Goa in 2014. He scored the team’s first goal in their 3-2 win against Mozambique in the final. But things didn’t go as expected as lack of playing time compelled him to return from Mumbai FC, who were then playing in the I-League. The lad then joined Calangute Association in the GPL before signing for Dempo SC.
His performance in the Goa Pro League earned him a call for Churchill Brothers FC after they were reinstated in the I-League once again.
However, with the strong line-up featuring Adil Khan and Rowilson Rodrigues made it difficult to break into playing eleven, despite making four appearances in the League, Back then he was just 22 years old. He then joined FC Goa Development team when they were first formed.
However, after re-joining the Red Machines, Meldon Silva started in both the games for Churchill Brothers FC in the Goa Professional League and the lad didn’t take time to settle in the squad as he was outstanding in the heart of the Red Machines defence maintaining two clean sheets.
“Now that I have got a chance with Churchill Brothers to play in the I-League, I’m looking forward to give my best for the Red Machines and try to earn my place in the I-League squad, which is definitely one step bigger than playing for FC Goa development team in the Goa Professional League,” expressed Meldon D’Silva.
“I will make the best of this opportunity and try to make a mark this season,” concluded Meldon.
