A Srinagar court on Thursday issued a non-bailable warrant against Farooq Abdullah after rejecting his exemption plea in the multi-crore Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) scam case. The court had scheduled March 12 for framing of charges, but the trial has been delayed since 2018 after the CBI filed the charge sheet.
Abdullah was absent as he was in Jammu, where he survived an assassination attempt late Wednesday. The attacker, identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, fired a licensed revolver during a wedding in Greater Kailash, but security intervened, and Abdullah escaped unharmed.
Despite being offered the option to appear virtually, Abdullah did not join the proceedings. His counsel’s exemption request was denied, prompting the court to issue the warrant and fix the next hearing for March 30. Abdullah, who led JKCA from 2001 to 2011, has denied wrongdoing, claiming attempts to malign his reputation.
