Yograj Singh blames Dhoni for Yuvraj’s exit, Sandeep Patil denies captain’s involvement

Former India cricketer and selector Sandeep Patil has come forward to defend MS Dhoni in the ongoing debate surrounding Yuvraj Singh’s exclusion from the Indian team. The controversy arose after Yuvraj’s father, Yograj Singh, repeatedly alleged that Dhoni played a role in sidelining the veteran all-rounder, sparking debates among fans and cricket pundits.

Dhoni and Yuvraj shared several memorable partnerships for India, contributing to some of the team’s most significant victories. However, after their playing days, tensions surfaced when Yograj publicly blamed Dhoni for his son’s early exit from international cricket. “That man has ruined my son’s life, who could have played for four to five more years… there will never be another Yuvraj Singh,” Yograj had said.

Sandeep Patil, who was India’s chief selector between 2012 and 2016, categorically denied Dhoni’s involvement in any selection decisions. Patil stated that the former captain never asked selectors to drop Yuvraj or any other player. “Not once, not during selection meetings, not on tour, not during matches, did Mahendra Singh Dhoni say drop Yuvraj Singh. I am going on the record. He had total confidence in the selection committee. He didn’t say anything,” Patil said.

While acknowledging a father’s emotional concern for his son, Patil stressed that the criticism directed at Dhoni was misplaced. “A father feeling strongly about his son is not wrong. But the blame is being placed in the wrong place,” he added.

Yuvraj Singh played for India for 17 years, with his last international match in 2017, before announcing his retirement in 2019. He remains one of India’s greatest cricketers, remembered for his explosive batting, crucial partnerships, and contributions to India’s major tournament wins. Patil’s statements reaffirm Dhoni’s professional integrity and clarify that team selection decisions rested solely with the selection committee.
