Ahead of the Assam assembly elections scheduled for April 9, suspected militants targeted a police commando camp in Tinsukia district on Sunday, leaving four police personnel injured. The injured officers were immediately taken to a hospital in Dibrugarh for treatment.
The attack occurred around 2 am in the Jagun area, near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Locals reported hearing heavy firing from automatic weapons and explosions, possibly from grenades or rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
Preliminary reports suggest that unidentified attackers carried out a well-coordinated ambush, reportedly throwing five grenades at the camp before opening indiscriminate fire on the personnel. While there is no official confirmation yet from the police or district administration regarding casualties or structural damage, the situation has raised concerns about security ahead of the state elections.
Following the attack, security forces intensified patrolling in the area and launched a large-scale search operation in nearby forested regions to track down the attackers. Officials are coordinating with local law enforcement and intelligence units to investigate the incident and prevent any further threats.
This attack marks another instance of militant activity in Assam, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region, especially in areas close to the state’s borders. Authorities have urged locals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity while the search operation continues.
