The Election Commission of India has advanced the enforcement of the liquor ban in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming elections scheduled for April 23, citing an unusual surge in alcohol sales.
As per norms, the prohibition on liquor sales typically comes into effect two days before polling. However, in this case, the ban has already been implemented in constituencies where voting will take place on Thursday, effectively halting alcohol sales earlier than expected.

In an official statement, the Commission noted a “significant and unusual spike” in liquor sales in recent days. It also highlighted a sharp increase in the procurement of packaged liquor by retailers from depots operated by the West Bengal State Beverages Corporation Limited during April 2026, compared to the same period last year.
Additionally, authorities observed a rise in the number of outlets classified as “sensitive” based on established monitoring criteria. The poll body stated that its conclusions were drawn from multiple inputs, including ongoing liquor surveillance mechanisms.
The Commission further pointed out that overall liquor sales this April have surpassed figures recorded during the corresponding period in the previous year, prompting stricter enforcement measures to ensure free and fair elections.
