Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief C Joseph Vijay on Sunday paid tribute to Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) founder V Prabhakaran on his death anniversary, once again bringing focus to the long-standing Sri Lankan Tamil issue. Referring to Mullivaikkal in Sri Lanka, where Prabhakaran was killed during the final phase of the Sri Lankan Civil War in 2009, Vijay posted on X that the memories of Mullivaikkal would always remain in their hearts and pledged solidarity with Tamils living “across the sea.”
The LTTE remains a banned organisation in India for its involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991, with Prabhakaran named as the main accused in the case.
May 18 is observed by sections of Tamils worldwide as Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day or Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, commemorating thousands of Tamil civilians who were reportedly killed, injured, or disappeared during the final military offensive in Sri Lanka.
Though the Sri Lankan Tamil issue was not a major electoral theme in the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly polls, Vijay has repeatedly voiced support for Eelam Tamils. In September 2025, he had described them as “umbilical-cord kin” and said it was Tamil Nadu’s duty to raise its voice for them. Vijay’s minority government currently receives support from the VCK, a party known for its pro-LTTE stance.
