Political tensions in West Bengal intensified on Sunday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he was attacked during a protest outside Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district. The incident occurred when Banerjee and other TMC leaders arrived to submit a memorandum against the arrest of party workers following the Assembly elections.
According to reports, a group of protesters waved black flags and shouted slogans against the TMC delegation, leading to a tense confrontation. Banerjee claimed he suffered a head injury during the protest and was seen holding a cloth to the back of his head.
The development comes just a day after TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly heckled and manhandled during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas, where he had gone to meet families affected by post-poll violence.
Kalyan Banerjee accused BJP supporters of being behind the attack and criticised the police for failing to intervene despite the incident taking place in their presence. He later staged a dharna outside the police station, asserting that the TMC would continue protesting against what the party describes as politically motivated attacks on its leaders and workers.
