Contractor caught dumping garbage along highway

Residents living near the government school at Zuarinagar-Sancoale on Thursday caught a contractor red-handed while dumping the garbage alongside the highway.
The residents later handed over the contractor to Verna Police.
The area, barely 50 mtrs from the government school along the highway at Zuarinagar-Sancoale, has become a dumping ground for garbage.
The garbage generated by elite class from Vidayanagar Association, Zuarinagar and Ragavi Estate from Sancoale and Dabolim is being dumped near the government school at Zuarinagar.
According to sources, the residents living in the posh colonies, Vidayanagar and Rangavi Estate, have appointed a contractor to collect their garbage.
Sources further informed that the contractor has allegedly been dumping garbage near a residential area close to the government school, Zuarinagar, an exercise which has been going on smoothly for the last one year.
When asked who had authorized him to dump the garbage, the contractor said panchayat members from Sancoale have allowed him to dump the garbage.
Sancoale Panch Girish Pillai, who was present at the site, claimed that the contractor was making false allegations, as the panchayat had not permitted him to dump the garbage.
Vidayanagar Association General Secretary Edy Fernandes said most of the residents of Vidyanagar are regularly paying tax to the panchayat.
“Despite repeated visits to the panchayat, they are least concerned to collect the garbage from the colony. It is due to this problem, resident themselves collect Rs 100 from each house to pay the contractor to collect the garbage,” informed Fernandes.
“Unfortunately, we were not aware where the contractor used to dispose the garbage.
But now since the matter has come to our notice, we will convene general body meeting to work out a solution to the issue,” added Fernandes.
