Telaulim-Varca Bridge will be opened on Dec 19: Churchill

One of the three dream bridges of PWD Minister Churchill Alemao over River Sal will be commissioned on Liberation Day on December 19 this year.
If the PWD minister is to be believed, the 74-meter long Telaulim-Varca Bridge will be thrown open for traffic on December 19 this year.
Alemao also said that the 620 meter-long Assolna-Cavelossim bridge would be completed and commission on December 19, 2011.
On the fate of the controversial Sinquetim-Benaulim Bridge, Alemao told newsmen that the matter was presently pending in the High Court, adding that the PWD was awaiting a court decision before going ahead with the construction work.
Churchill along with senior PWD officials inspected the two bridges of Assolna-Cavelossim and Telaulim-Varca this evening and expressed satisfaction over the progress of the work.
Thanking the people of Telaulim for welcoming the Telaulim-Varca Bridge with open arms, Alemao said that 60-70 per cent of the bridge work is almost complete and added that the bridge would be thrown open for traffic by December 19 this year. The estimated cost of this bridge is put at Rs 10.5 crore.
As far as the Cavelossim Bridge is concerned, he said nearly 40 per cent of the 620-meter long bridge is completed till date and the balance 60 per cent work would be completed in all respects by December 19 next year. “This bridge has 21 spans and is estimated to cost Rs 55 crore,” he added.
The PWD minister said the Assolna-Cavelossim bridge would not only benefit the residents of the two villages of Cavelossim and Assolna, but would give a boost to tourism and benefit entire South Goa.
“Let the court decide. If the court gives a decision in favour of the bridge, we will go ahead with the construction of the Sinquetim-Benaulim Bridge. We will wait for the court order,” he added.
