PANJIM: Following serious complaints of harassment of tourists and overcharging by the contractor appointed for collection of parking fees at Calangute parking lot, the Tourism department has terminated his three year contract and floated fresh tenders.
According to officials, the contractor appointed to manage and collect parking fees at Umtawaddo, Calangute had completed one year of the contract and despite several appeals to mend his ways, had not done so.
Officials had collected concrete evidence of overcharging by the said contractor thereby compelling the department to terminate the contract recently, sources said.
The department has floated fresh tenders for management of the parking lot and collection of parking fees at Calangute which includes its properties and has decided that henceforth the parking coupons will be issued through machine ticketing.
“This will help account for every vehicle charged as per the rates approved by the government,” said a senior official in the Tourism department disclosing that the department had received complaints of overcharging and total mismanagement by the contractor.
