Sugar prices have climbed to record levels across India, rising by nearly 40% over the past two months, prompting the Centre to consider emergency measures to stabilise prices and ensure adequate supply.
The government has ruled out diversion of sugar towards ethanol production as the primary reason for the sharp increase. Instead, officials have attributed the price rise to lower sugar production, weather-related crop damage, increased festive demand and market speculation.
The steep rise in prices has raised concerns over its impact on consumers as well as the wider food market.
The Centre is closely monitoring sugar prices and market availability and is considering measures to contain the surge and maintain stable supplies.
