VASCO: To bring all the roadside hawkers and vendors from the port town under one roof, Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Standing Committee members along with a municipal inspector carried out an inspection at the open space, near KTC shuttle service bus stand.
After the inspection, speaking to media, MMC Councillor Nilesh Navelkar said, “The shifting will ensure that the vegetables, fish and fruit vendors are at close proximity to each other and will also be beneficial for the people.”
Navelkar stated that I have raised this issue in the Standing Committee meeting before chairperson and chief officer and had also proposed to shift the hawkers from the parking area to the open space near KTC shuttle service bus stand temporarily.
He said, “NGOs and Traffic Cell Vasco have written several times to MMC for shifting of these fruit vendors who are occupying footpaths and the notified area for two-wheeler parking but MMC has not taken any action so far.”
“It is very surprising to note that no action has been taken for a long time by MMC after several agencies and I raising this issue several times in the Council and Standing Committee meetings,” questioned Navelkar.
He also opined that the shifting will also ensure that the vegetables, fish and fruit markets are close to each other and won’t cause inconvenience to the buyers as well.
“MMC has assured me that the hawkers will be shifted to an open space near the KTC shuttle service bus stand,” said Navelkar.
