VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council election campaigning has reached its final stage and will conclude on Wednesday evening.

On one side, the aspirants are trying hard to gain political power and win, on the other side the COVID-19 cases in the State are increasing at an alarming rate.
Of the 125 candidates in fray in all the 25 wards of Mormugao Municipal Council, 59 candidates this time are females.
The 25 wards of municipal area come under three constituencies, Mormugao, Vasco and Dabolim in which all BJP MLAs are ruling with two being Cabinet ministers. In some wards there are straight fights, whereas in some wards there is a three-way fight. Many wards have over five candidates. In Ward 12, there are 11 candidates with Ward 17 having 10.
This year surprisingly, the number of female candidates is quite high. Citizens say there are chances the MMC might have more female councillors this time.
Many females, along with the MLAs and ministers, are seen in door-to-door campaigning, and corner meetings. Few days ago, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the port town during the release of the manifesto of the BJP-backed panel.
Despite the spike in COVID-19 cases, the corner meetings were called putting lives at risk as SOPs were reportedly not maintained and covering of faces with masks were also missing.
In Mormugao Constituency wards, there is an expected royal rumble between the candidates backed by Sankalp Amonkar and BJP minister Milind Naik.
In Vasco, a tough fight among the candidates backed by MLA Carlos Almeida, and former revenue minister Jose Philip D’Souza and former councillor Daji Salkar is expected. In Dabolim Constituency, many candidates are supported by BJP.
