POINGUINIM: The ban on cow slaughtering has not only affected Goans, but has also affected people in Karwar as all beef shops in Karwar have closed down their shutters due to no supply from Goa.
Sources informed that there has also been no supply from Belgaum and Sawantwadi-Maharashtra to Karwar.
Sources informed that there were two unlicensed cattle slaughter houses at Karwar and after constant alleged harassment by the police they stopped the slaughtering business and it is learnt that the cattle stock in their cattle sheds are given fodder to maintain their good health.
About 35 per cent of Karwar population consists of Christians and Muslims and they are the main consumers of beef.
A beef seller at Karwar claimed that he finds the police at his shop to find whether he is selling beef.
He added that the police had asked him to stop selling pork but when he showed them a license copy of his piggery, they kept silent.
Another lady at Karwar who does catering business said last week for a wedding ceremony she had to procure beef from Dandeli, where there is a licensed slaughter house and had to travel to Dandeli in a private vehicle.
She said she has applied for the license with the municipal council and the Health department for the slaughter house and that it will take a lot of time before she gets the clearance.
Beef was sold at Rs 125 and pork meat was sold at Rs 160 at Karwar and many people from Loliem used to travel to Karwar because at Karwar it was much cheaper compared to the rates in Loliem. People used to also buy vegetables, fish and other groceries that were considerably cheaper than the local rates.
