GSPCB considering vermi-remediation of hazardous waste

Environment Minister Alina Saldanha on Monday informed the State Legislative Assembly that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) is considering vermi-remediation of 25,000 tonne hazardous waste stacked in a plot at Cuncolim Industrial estate by the Sunrise Zinc Ltd

The unit which was shut down nearly eight years back. She also said the hazardous waste stored at Plot No. L-2 of the Industrial Estate is identified as one among the 100 priority sites in India for the remediation by the Ministry of Environment programme “Capacity Building for Industrial Pollution Management Project for the remediation of contaminated sites in the country.” “The process of remediation is expected to begin in the next six months,” she said adding increasing pollution at Cuncolim industrial estate and surrounding areas due to the stacking of hazardous waste.
The question was raised by BJP MLA Subhash Naik who sought to know the measures initiated by GSPCB to tackle or clear off the hazardous waste. Replying to the query, she said that the Board received a proposal from Gujarat based M/s Concept Bio Tech ltd, who proposed vermi- remediation of the hazardous waste. “Board is currently in the process of appointing a proof consultant to examine the proposal and also to monitor the execution,” she said.
