PANJIM: The general elections to elect the new council of Ponda and Sankhali municipalities will be held on May 5, while the counting of votes will take place on May 7.
The terms of both the municipalities ends on May 20. With announcement of election schedule by the State Election Commission (SEC), the Model Code of Conduct has come into force within the jurisdiction of Ponda and Sankhali municipal areas, with immediate effect.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, the State Election Commissioner W V Ramanmurthy said that the elections to the 15 wards of Ponda municipality and 12 of Sankhali will be held on May 5, between 8 am and 5 pm.
The COVID-19 patients will be entitled to cast their vote in last hour of the poll that is from 4 pm to 5 pm, Ramanmurthy said adding that the elections will be held on non-party lines and voting will take place through ballot.
The filing of nominations will be held from Monday — April 10 to 18 except on April 14 — being a public holiday and April 16, being Sunday. The scrutiny of the nominations will take place on April 19, while the withdrawals, if any, will be done on April 20.
The SEC has adopted triple-test formula for reservation of wards for other backward class and women. As per the notification, total five seats are reserved for OBC and women in Ponda while four in Sankhali municipal area.
A total of 16,305 voters are eligible to vote in Ponda and another 8,640 will exercise their right in Sankhali. The District Collectors are appointed as the municipal election officers.
