Margao: People gathered in large numbers and protested the manner in which the South Western Railway began the double tracking work at the Sao Jose de Areal railway gate on Friday.
The Panchayat members and people along with the SWR decided to hold a meeting at the Panchayat to check the documents and re-demarcate the land before the railways proceeded with the work.
The people demanded a resurvey of the land that is taken for double tracking.
Former Sarpanch, Cincy Mascarenhas said, “We have demanded a resurvey of the land. They claim that they have possession to the land but the Railways have never kept the panchayat in the loop hence we don’t have any documents of the project,” he said.
Sarpanch, Minguel Rodrigues said, “We had asked them to stop the work but they restarted it. We have asked for a resurvey by one of our private surveyor along with their surveyor. This will be done on Monday,” he said.
Minguel said the protests started late as the work on the second track has been completed to the extent of 90%.
“We will still do what we can to make sure our protest is registered,” said Minguel.
Freddy Travasso urged the people to attend the meeting scheduled to be held on Monday.
“I urge our MLA Philip Neri Rodrigues to come and see the state in which his village is,” Freddy said.
