PORVORIM: The fish shed at Malim has remained unused since it’s inauguration in the last week of October. The fisherwomen have stated that they have to carry their fish up a flight of stairs to reach the shed, which they do not want to do, and that it is easier for customers to purchase fish by the roadside.
It may be recalled that the Malim panchayat, taking cognizance of the problems faced by fisherwomen who sit beside the road under the Malim bridge, especially during the monsoons, had approached the contractor of the third Mandovi Bridge, Larson & Toubro, for the construction of a fish shed. The Public Works Department (PWD) has also provided a water connection for this shed. Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte, while inaugurating the shed, had requested the fisherwomen to use it. However, they have not complied.
Brittona resident Peter Fernandes stated that the panchayat should make it compulsory for the fisherwomen to use the shed. He said, “If the shed remains unused by the fisherwomen, then it will be used by beggars and antisocial elements, and the lakhs of rupees spent on constructing this shed will go down the drain.”
