Canacona businessmen oppose Mopa airport

POINGUINIM: The Association of Businessmen of Canacona (ABC) has strongly opposed the proposed Mopa airport on grounds that their business interests in South Goa will be severely affected.

In a press note, ABC President Diogo Da Silva stated that Navy will one day close the Dabolim airport for civilian use as they did for devotees visiting the Anjidiva Island of Goa.

“If the Dabolim airport is shifted to Mopa, then the entire business establishments in South Goa will be adversely affected. The Dabolim airport should be handed to the civilians and Navy should start its operations from Sea Bird Project at Karwar,” states the press note.

Speaking to Herald, an ABC member said that the Indian Navy Sea Bird project airport at Karwar construction work was inaugurated by then defence minister George Fernandes in 2002 and is nearing completion.

“The Dabolim airport that was meant for civilian use should be used for civilian use and Navy should operate from Karwar Naval Base and leave the Dabolim airport for the civilians,” asserted the member.
