MARGAO: Miscreants vandalised ornamental lamps installed along the beautified Hospicio steps leading to Monte Chapel, Margao.
The incident occurred late last night when two groups quarrelled and came face to face before fleeing away after damaging the lamps. While one group is believed to have headed towards Monte Hill, the second group went towards Hospicio, Margao, informed a resident Ivo Faleiro.
Faleiro told Herald that the miscreants went on damaging around half-a-dozen ornamental lamps, which were installed along the beautified steps a couple of months ago. “I immediately called up the Margao police, but they came 15-20 minutes late after the miscreants had disappeared from the spot”, he added.
The Hospicio steps were beautified and renovated under MPLAD scheme amounting to nearly Rs 40 lakh. Since then, the spot was much frequented by newly married couples for photography after nuptials. Local residents, however, claimed that the steps were being misused by miscreants as evident by the fact that empty beer cans and other beverages were seen disposed of in its vicinity.
