Eco Treks Goa celebrates 17 years of adventure and friendship

Eco Treks Goa, one of the state’s pioneering trekking communities, marked its 17th anniversary with great enthusiasm and camaraderie in the scenic village of Rivona. The day-long celebration brought together nature lovers, seasoned trekkers, and environmentalists to honour 17 remarkable years of exploration, discovery, and connection with nature.

Founded on October 26, 2008, by six like-minded adventurers, Alexyz, Aarti Das, Olympio Almeida, Durgadas, Julie, and Vrishabh Parab — Eco Treks began as a small group passionate about exploring Goa’s natural beauty. Over the years, it has evolved into a thriving community of over 3,000 members, conducting treks across Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and even the Himalayas. On average, the group holds one trek every month, each designed to combine adventure with environmental awareness and community involvement.

A milestone moment in Rivona

The 17th anniversary trek, which also marked the group’s 177th outing, took place amidst Rivona’s tranquil landscapes, known for its historic caves, freshwater springs, and lush countryside. A total of 77 participants joined this special event, which blended celebration, education, and exploration.

The day began with a hearty breakfast, followed by a visit to the Rivona Spring, an interactive session at Patil Farm, and a traditional home-cooked lunch. The event concluded with a trip to the Rivona Caves, wrapping up a day filled with laughter, reflection, and shared memories.

Wisdom, gratitude, and green lessons

The celebration featured introductions of all members, both new and old, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony led by the youngest and eldest trekkers. A special highlight was an engaging session with Prof. Hector Andrade, a medicinal plant conservationist and former principal of the Mercedes-Benz International School in Pune, and his wife Kavitha, a wellness and sustainability advocate.

Prof. Andrade shared heartfelt advice on reconnecting with nature, saying,

“Treks are a good time to slow down your life, take deep breaths, and connect with what truly matters. One connects with the Earth, with one’s evolutionary past, and with one’s deeper self. Eco Treks is a wonderful initiative that encourages Goans to go outdoors and enjoy the company of like-minded people.”

Remembering the journey

Founding member Durgadas Parab expressed deep gratitude as he reflected on the group’s 17-year journey.

“Every trail has had its own story. I’m grateful for another year, another trek, another memory. It’s not about where you go or what you achieve — it’s about who you travel with and learn from,” he said, thanking his fellow trekkers, guides, and supporters who helped the group grow “from the hills to the Himalayas.”

Though Alexyz, the President of Eco Treks, couldn’t attend the celebration, his art was present in spirit as mementos were presented to Prof. Hector and Pandurang Patil. Uday Mahambre also recited a poem that beautifully captured the charm and simplicity of village life.

A legacy of community and connection

Eco Treks has always emphasised community engagement — collaborating with locals, enjoying traditional meals, and learning about village traditions. In Rivona, Pandurang Patil and his family offered warm hospitality, embodying the group’s ethos of sustainability and friendship.

Veteran trekker Miguel Braganza from Mapusa summed up the spirit of the event:

“The 17th anniversary of Eco Treks with its 177th trek and 77 participants is a milestone. The Rivona trek offered a wonderful Kulaghar experience — from areca and coconut plantations to traditional Goan food and camaraderie. Short treks to the spring and ancient caves made it truly special.”

As the sun set over Rivona, the air was filled with laughter, nostalgia, and renewed inspiration — a fitting celebration of 17 years of exploring nature, building friendships, and leaving only footprints behind.
