The Goa government should seriously decide to take over the fishing industry for good at the very earliest because the people who are involved/hired (mostly Kannadis, Keralites, Tamils) have been deliberately supplying/selling rejected fish for Goans at exorbitant rates over the years in most local markets (including jetties) to keep exporting fish of high quality outside the state and to make fast bucks for themselves.
The fishing ban has officially ended long back and we are already in the month of February but this year too, these business-minded people are claiming that there is no fish and due to which even the small fish that is currently available in the fish markets is being sold at higher rates. I think that this whole thing sounds like a big joke.
If these people cannot provide quality fish at a cheaper rate for Goans during season time then when will they really supply? During off-season or rainy season? The price of medium/king prawns, kingfish, big mackerels etc is still on the higher side, today even small fish (the fish that no one bought in the past) like Sardines, Kormott, Leppo etc is being sold at Rs 150 per kg, why?
And, if the catch is always so bad in our state (as being always claimed or projected) then how come we see a number of huge trucks from neighbouring states compulsorily being parked at all the jetties right now and during every season time? I therefore strongly believe that the government should immediately intervene in this whole matter because this whole thing looks like another major extortion racket. Of course, we can forget the mining scam as we cannot consume iron ore but not this ongoing extortion racket on fish because it is our fish that is being unnecessarily exported by depriving us Goans despite of knowing fully well that the same is our regular diet. This whole rot should therefore stop somewhere at the very earliest, the buck should stop now…. Yes, henceforth there should be no excuses on fish as today even the school-going kids are known to practically catch plenty of fish by going fishing in different parts of Goa, including ponds, lakes etc….. Is the fishing industry listening?
