Two days after the stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur that claimed 41 lives, police have arrested TVK’s Karur West District Secretary, Mathiyazhagan, holding him accountable for lapses that led to the tragedy.
Mathiyazhagan has been charged under sections related to attempt to murder, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and endangering public safety. Cases have also been registered against TVK General Secretary Bussy Anand and Joint General Secretary Nirmal Sekar.
The FIR, based on a complaint by a police officer, also names party founder and actor-politician Vijay. It alleges that Vijay’s deliberate delay in appearing at the rally—nearly four hours after arriving in the district—created restlessness and triggered dangerous crowd surges that proved fatal.
According to police, Vijay further violated conditions by undertaking a roadshow without prior permission, fueling “unnecessary expectations” among supporters. The FIR also accuses senior TVK leaders of ignoring repeated warnings about the risks of overcrowding at the event.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities examine lapses in crowd management and the role of party leadership in the incident.
