In the midst of controversy surrounding his ‘Gaza Plan’, President Donald Trump of the United States emphasized that no one would be ‘removed’ from the region. He made these comments prior to his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin at the White House on Wednesday (local time). While speaking alongside Martin, Trump stated, “No one is expelling anyone from Gaza.”

During their discussion, Trump referred to US Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer as ‘a Palestinian’, saying, “As far as I’m concerned, Schumer is a Palestinian. He used to be Jewish, but he’s not Jewish anymore. He’s a Palestinian now.” Trump had previously made a similar remark about Schumer in a social media post back in February. In response, Martin highlighted the need for increased aid to Gaza and called for a ceasefire, as well as the release of hostages taken by Hamas since the attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023.
In early December, Israel declared the shutdown of its embassy in Ireland, pointing to the nation’s ‘anti-Israel stance’ as the reason. This announcement followed closely on the heels of Ireland’s backing of South Africa’s move against Israel at the International Court of Justice, where Israel was accused of genocide.
