A severe cold wave swept across large parts of north India on Monday, pushing temperatures to their lowest levels of the season and intensifying biting cold conditions across the region, including the national capital. As the cold spell continues, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, have warned that extreme cold can aggravate chronic health conditions, especially those related to the heart, lungs, kidneys and metabolic disorders.
Delhi recorded its coldest January day since 2023, with minimum temperatures dropping to around 3 degrees Celsius at several weather stations across the city. The Safdarjung observatory registered a low of 3.2 degrees Celsius, the lowest minimum temperature of the season so far.

Colder conditions prevailed in the outskirts of the National Capital Region (NCR), where temperatures dipped close to the freezing mark, bringing near sub-zero conditions in some areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cold wave is likely to persist over the next few days, with severe cold wave conditions expected to continue in isolated pockets of northern India. Authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions, particularly the elderly and those with existing medical conditions, as the harsh winter spell continues to affect daily life across the region.
