A controversy erupted in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, after Shama Parveen, a resident of Biribari village, alleged that a doctor at the district women’s hospital refused to treat her on religious grounds. The hospital authorities denied the claim, stating that the doctor examined her on the night of September 30, when she was admitted for delivery.
A video circulated on social media showed Parveen claiming the doctor said, “I will not treat a Muslim woman,” and asked her family to seek care elsewhere. The Chief Medical Superintendent, Dr Mahendra Gupta, confirmed that the doctor denied the allegations, and an inquiry is ongoing.
Police have registered an FIR against two local journalists who allegedly filmed the video inside the labour room and damaged hospital property. The incident has drawn political reactions, with Samajwadi Party MLA Ragini Sonkar and Congress leader Vikesh Upadhyay condemning the alleged denial of care, while BJP spokesperson Avnish Tyagi dismissed the claims as baseless.
