MARGAO: The Fatorda police on Thursday detained 16 migrants and four employers who had transported the migrant labourers and attempted to drop them near the Fatorda stadium.
Fatorda Police Inspector Kapil Nayak said besides the 16 migrants and drivers, the four vehicles which were used to transport the migrants were seized. The offenders have been booked under the Section 188 of IPC for disobeying/promulgated the order of the District Collector.
Nayak said there are already 2,000 migrants and labourers at the shelter home in Fatorda. “The migrants were being left outside the Fatorda Stadium to fend for themselves. The employers of the migrants would deliberately leave them outside the stadium when they could buy tickets for them and send them back to their villages,” he said.
The Fatorda police has increased patrolling and posted their staff at the stadium who managed to catch the employers of the migrants.
He said he urged the employers to buy train tickets for the migrants and send them back to their native places rather than just abandoning them.
Nayak said the persons they intercepted today were from North Goa.
Herald had in its Thursday edition reported how various businessmen involved in construction, fishing, stone quarry and sand extraction activities were abandoning their labourers near shelter home at Fatorda.
