PONDA: The by-election to Ward 9 of Curti-Khandepar Panchayat recorded 74.96 per cent voting on Sunday.
It may be recalled that the seat fell vacant following the death of panch Kamlakant Parab in December last year.
The voting process started at 8 am and concluded at 5 pm. Out of the 1,254 voters, 940 votes were polled of which 512 were male and 428 were female voters. Counting of votes will be taken up on Monday.
The election was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.
The by-election to Ward 9 has brought to the fore differences between Ponda MLA Lavoo Mamledar and MGP-supported PMC Councillor Venkatesh Naik. Mamledar had declared party support to Sarita Parab, wife of late Kamalakant, while Vekatesh Naik supported Sudhir Raut. In all, five candidates were in the fray.
