PORVORIM: Advocating the importance of Gram Sabha as the “parliament” of the village, Dr Dattaram Dessai, North Goa candidate of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on Thursday insisted that the decisions of the Gram Sabha should never be challenged.
“AAP believes in Gram Swaraj and if voted to power, the Gram Sabhas will be empowered to take decisions about the welfare of the village and also try to establish true Swaraj in Goa and the country,” assured Dr Dessai, while addressing a public meeting at Saligao on Thursday.
“Payments of the bills of the road contractors should be released only after certification of the work by the Gram Sabha.” Dessai said that he would also strive to encourage environment-friendly industries in the State.
“The unemployment problem is getting worse by the day and the BJP government in Goa has done nothing to provide employment to the unemployed youth. On the contrary, the government has made people lazy by launching schemes like Gruha Adhaar, etc,” charged Dr Dessai.
Commenting on the garbage issue, he said the problem should be solved at the grassroots. “AAP feels that every household should segregate wet and dry garbage separately. They should bury the wet waste in their compound and direct panchayat to collect dry garbage and send it for recycling. Alternately, mini plants or composting units can be set up in villages to treat garbage,” he said.
AAP member Dr Oscar Rebello said the time had come for the Aam Admi to come together and change the system and save democracy.
“National parties are not bothered about the common man. They are worried about corporate lobby, etc. Every individual should fight for their basic rights and they should not bow before anybody to get their works done,” he said.
“AAP will continuously work for the improvement of the system in the government and strive to weed out corruption, communalism and criminality from the governance,” added Dr Rebello.
