PANJIM: With traffic police identifying nearly 200 abandoned vehicles, which are occupying precious parking space in the capital city, the North District Collector IAS R Menaka has granted 60 days time for the vehicle owners to make their claims, failing which they would be auctioned.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the North Collector has expressed possible fear of vehicles becoming breeding ground of mosquitoes, which could lead to the spread of vector-borne disease in the city.

Menaka added that the concerned vehicle owner should submit the claim over the vehicle to the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) within 60 days, failing which its ownership will vest with the State government; and the procedure to auction the vehicles would be initiated.
Sources said that traffic police has identified 198 vehicles that include 82 four-wheelers and 116 two-wheelers. The list has been submitted to the Collector.
The auction of the vehicles, if required, would be initiated through the CCP.
Since last three years, CCP was unable to auction the vehicles with the finance department refusing to grant its consent to the tender. So far nearly, 350 such vehicles are to be auctioned.
