PANJIM: Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), investigating the disproportionate asset case against opposition leader Chandrakant (Babu) Kavlekar, has expedited the probe and is likely to file a chargesheet in a few months.
A senior ACB officer said the agency has written to the Maharashtra registrar of societies to verify the details of the companies named by Kavlekar from which he claims he received a loan of Rs 5.5 crore.
Kavlekar submitted that he had obtained loan from Mumbai-based Akshit Exports amounting to Rs 1,70,00,000, from Vibha Star of Rs 3,00,00,000 and from Prime Star of Rs 80,00,000.
An officer said that during the inquiry it was revealed that the all three companies do not exist. ACB said there is no explanation as to the mode, date obtained, date received, loan through cheque, DD or cash etc and loan payments made thereof the loans worth Rs 5.5 crore, that were shown to be obtained by companies owned by Kavlekar and his wife.
ACB has checked Kavlekar’s income and expenditure between January 1, 2007 and April 30, 2013 and found Rs 7,20,27,439 likely savings. During the same period ACB found Kavlekar had acquired assets of worth Rs 11,98,85,910.
After subtracting the likely savings, ACB found disproportionate assets of Rs 4,78,58,471, which is 59.21 percent above their known sources of income during the period.
The loan of Rs 5.5 crore is questionable and could go to increase the disproportionate asset percentage substantially.
Kavlekar was booked by ACB on September 15, 2017 for disproportionate assets.
after the branch found property worth crores of rupees in his possession. He was also facing a preliminary inquiry in a disproportionate assets case since 2013 but the fresh FIR has merged with the earlier one.
