Activists piqued over filling of low lying land at Benaulim

MARGAO: Activists from Benaulim saw red over the mud filling in the water catchment area of the river Sal behind an educational institution at Comba.

Activist Jose Rodrigues has sought to know the rationale behind the mud filing when land filling of the catchment area has been the cause of flooding of the low lying areas of Khareband and Benaulim.
Herald inquiries, however, revealed that the filling is being undertaken by an educational institution to build a playground for the students. A representative of the institution told Herald that the mud filling is being undertaken with the necessary permission from the authorities to build a football ground. “We have obtained all permission to fill the land in question,” the representatives said.
Low lying areas of Benaulim around the Pedda area of the village were hit by inundation last monsoons, with local villagers attributing the flooding to the rampant and indiscriminate land filling of wetland as well as on the banks of river Sal.
