Agriculture mela held at Navelim

MARGAO: The Zonal Agriculture Office organised its 12th agriculture mela at Navelim on Wednesday. The event saw more than seven mechanised-farming equipment brands display their products for more than 800 farmers from Navelim and adjoining areas. Several farmers were given approval letters for tractors, power tillers, fencing and other farming essentials. Krishi cards and prizes for the winners of the ‘Mango Festival’ were also distributed.

“Someday, when youngsters dirty their hands in the fields with help of the department’s schemes and say that they are lakhpatis or crorepatis, that is the time we can say we have succeeded in our motives,” said Agriculture Minister Ramesh Tawadkar, adding, “We need to reinstate trust amongst the farmers that they will prosper if they get into agriculture.”
Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado promised Navelim’s agriculturists that he would initiate procurement of machinery and funds for agriculture development.
“Agriculturists are warned not to keep their lands fallow. If they do so, their lands will be full of vegetation and soon be classified as private forests,” said Director of Agriculture Orlando Rodrigues.
