NAVELIM: Sr Mary Jane Pinto was laid to rest at Our Lady of Rosary Church cemetery, Navelim, on Thursday.
Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao was the main celebrant with other concelebrants.
In his homily, Fr Valerian Vaz described Sr Mary as the torch bearer to those who were in darkness and that she lived by the teachings of Jesus.
The Perpetual Succor Convent School band and the police band played at the funeral.
Ministry for Prison of India Chairman Sebastiao Vargese described Sr Mary as the ‘merciful mother.’ An admirer and a close team member Agnelo Crasto praised her saying she was the living example of mercy, a torch bearer and light to others.
The coffin was lowered down in the grave to the singing of the hymn ‘Near to My God’.
Navelim MLA Avertano Furtado laid a special wreath on behalf of the Government of Goa, while Inspector General of Prisons Elvis Gomes paid homage to the ‘Angel of Prisons’.
The funeral was attended by hundreds of laity, nuns and priests.
